These early 20th c. folk art carvings are of the comic strip characters known as “Jiggs & Maggie”. They are carved out of pine and still retain some of their original piant decorated surface. Jiggs has a seed pearl for a tie clasp and Maggie has wire earrings. A terrific, folky pair!
"Jiggs and Maggie" were the two feature characters in George McManus’ comic strip entitled Bringing Up Father. The comic strip was introduced in 1913 and ran for 87 years. The humor centers on an immigrant Irishman named Jiggs, who came into wealth by winning a million dollars in a sweepstakes. But he still longs to revert to his former working class habits and lifestyle, with constant attempts to sneak out with his old gang of rough-edged pals, eat corned beef and cabbage (known as "Jiggs dinner") and hang out at the local tavern where often thwarted by his formidable, rolling-pin wielding wife, Maggie.
