Exceptional 19th C. folk art carved lion on a base with three baskets at his back. I believe that this was meant to be a match safe of some sort. Carved from a single piece of walnut, he stands erect, boasting a lovely mane and a tail wrapped around his hind leg. He does not appear to ever have had ears. But this simply adds to his folky charm. A great piece of early American folk art! Measuring 7-1/4" wide by 5-1/4" deep by 6-1/4" tall. Age splits and minor surface imperfections consistent with age. A remarkable piece of Folk Art!
